This set of seventeen worksheets is designed to help students learn how to use the Oxford Student's Dictionary. It comprises five sections: Finding Words and Meanings, Pronunciation, Grammar, Choosing the Right Word to Use, and Vocabulary Building. Most of the exercises can be done by the students on their own, in class or for homework.

It is hoped that, by taking students step by step through a course in dictionary skills, we can help them to use the dictionary successfully and so to enjoy using it. In addition, teachers who can rely on students using the dictionary independently will need to spend less time answering individual queries and so will be able to devote more time to the class as a whole.

It is not, of course, essential that all the students do all the exercises. The first worksheets are the easiest, and are for students who are starting to use a monolingual dictionary. If you decide what their starting point should be, all the students will have the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the dictionary well. They should be given the worksheets to do one at a time. Dictionary skills are best acquired gradually as a component of a complete language-learning course.

Students are recommended to use the detailed guide at the front of the dictionary as well as the appendices at the back. These worksheets are designed to accompany this material. If your class are unfamiliar with alphabetical order in English, do a few exercises with them together first.
