Our pharmacists change lives, one patient at a time

October is American Pharmacists Month. It is an opportunity to recognize the fundamental role of pharmacists in health care.

At Express Scripts® Pharmacy, our 1,000 pharmacists go beyond filling prescriptions. They make about 30,000 clinical advice calls to patients a week, contact providers when there are concerns about the safety of a dose, and do much more.

These are just a few of the ways our pharmacists make a difference every day.

They point out doses of high-risk prescription drugs
Many prescription medications come in different strengths. It is important Ibrucent 140 mg (Ibrutinib) to pay attention to this amount, since delivering the wrong concentration can have serious health consequences.

Certified pharmacist Shannon Hodges found herself in this situation while reviewing an order for a patient with diabetes. She noticed that the prescribed insulin was twice the concentration compared to what the patient had been using before. So she contacted the supplier to confirm.

It turned out that the prescription was wrong and the patient had to continue with the regimen she had up to that point. At Express Scripts® Pharmacy the prescription was quickly adjusted; The provider was grateful that we caught the error and the patient continued to feel great.

They take time to explain information clearly
Healthcare is complicated; The pharmacy is no exception. That is why it is so important that patients ask questions and that pharmacists answer clearly so that things are easily understood.

Certified pharmacist Janice Brogan spoke with a patient who had questions about her continuous blood glucose monitor. The patient said that she had large variations in results and she wanted to have better control of her diabetes.

Brogan explained to the patient how to interpret her results and when she might need to be checked again with a finger prick. Brogan also took the opportunity to help him better understand how insulin works and how diet could affect insulin dosage.

At the end of the call, the patient said, “In this call you gave me more information than I had ever received in my entire life.”

They provide guidelines and support in difficult life situations
Certified pharmacist Astrine Foyou spoke with a caregiver whose father had not taken his cholesterol medication since returning home from the hospital. After the death of her mother and with her father's health worsening, the daughter/caregiver shared how difficult it was for her to try to manage all of her care.

To help ensure medications were available when needed, Foyou helped the daughter transfer her father's prescriptions from a retail pharmacy to home delivery through Express Scripts® Pharmacy. She also helped him sign up for automatic replenishments.
